The decision to build an automobile plant in the city of Tolyatti was made in July 1966, and the first car left the assembly line in 1970. Today AvtoVAZ OJSC is the largest producer of small cars in Russia. During the existence of the enterprise, the era of the undivided power of the state in industry was replaced by the era of private property. And the owners of the plant have changed more than once over the past decades.

At that time, the main shareholders of the company, in addition to Renault-Nissan, were Russian Technologies State Corporation and Troika Dialog, which owned a total of 25% of the company. It was later reported that the planned acquisition would be completed by the end of 2012. The Franco-Japanese company intends to invest more than $ 750 million in AvtoVAZ and get a share of 67%. An environmental review of the transaction is currently underway.
